♪ from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". heavy rain moves through the area. definitely a wet start to the weekend. but the good news it isn't a complete washout. justin drabick is tracking when the rain moves out. also ahead, new surface e-mail -- e-mail surface that could potentially derail the case against bill cosby. we've got the details. and investors are on edge after big losses on wall street. we're live with what's fueling the stock market slump. today is saturday, januar january 16th. good morning, i'm rah hold solomon. 42 degrees and 5:00 o'clock right here in center city philadelphia. here's meteorologist justin drabick with eyewitness weather. justin, certainly a wet start to this weekend. >> good news you can ditch the umbrella give it another half

hour, hour we'll start to dry thing out i won't ab bad saturday at all. >> i leak it. >> little bit of rain. you can hold off another hour most areas will be dry for the most part. overall temperatures not too bad. we'll be somewhat mild this time -- for this time of year. check it out. back of the edge moving through berks county and chester county couple leftover showers extreme northern delaware. give it five, 5:30 from west to east. that dry weather returns so improving conditions through the mid morning. still some problems as far as the fog goes north and west into the lehigh valley berks county visibility down to about a mile and a half in allentown. .30 of a mile up in mount poco pocono. there are the temperatures. mid and upper 30s north of the city. then you go from philadelphia on southward in the mid 40s and we should see a little bit of sunshine today with some spots getting up to near 50 degrees much winds right now pretty much calcalmed to about 10 miles per hour. they'll kick up later this morning into the afternoon and become gusty at times as drier air returns but check it out. 9:00 o'clock temperatures in the low 40s and some sunshine

returns by noontime in the upper 40s. we should make it up to about 51 degrees for the afternoon high for philadelphia. near 50 at the shore. looks like those clouds hold off longer in the poconos temperatures struggle to get to the upper 30 today's is the warmest day out of the next seven. we'll bring back cold arctic a air. we'll break down that for you coming up in the seven day forecast in few more minutes. back to you. >> thank you very much. this morning, reports of a bombshell e-mail that could derail the sexual assault case against comedian bill cosby. the e-mail obtained by cnn reportedly details a deal cosby made in 2005 to keep a deposition in a civil case from ever being used against him in a criminal court. that deposition is key evidence for prosecutors who champed the 78-year-old in december with sexually assaulting a former temple employee back in 2004. the e-mail was reportedly sent before charges were filed to former montgomery county district attorney lisa vet free per man by her predaceous sore

to comment from the da's office or cosby's representatives. new this morning four people are in the hospital after a wreck in west philadelphia overnight. it happened at the intersection of 67th and chester. two cars were involved. one car crashed into an suv parked in front of a house. the other landed in the front yard of a home. no word yet on the condition of the victims. police are still investigating the cause. two families are out of their homes this morning after a building collapse in the frankford section of philadelphia. it happened last night in the 2100 block of orthodox street. it was a partial collapse to three-story home. luckily no one was injured. the red cross is assisting those families displaced by the collapse. no word yet on that cause. philadelphia police officer is injured while trying to make an arrest in kensington. it happen at the corner of a and ontario streets around 7:00 last night. police say officers were questioning a 23-year-old man during a traffic stop when the man took off. the officers ran after him and

say he tried to pull a gun on them. one of the officers broke his ankle while wrestling the weapon away. the suspect was arrested and the officer is now recovering at temple hospital. well, plunging oil prices and china' economic slow down are being blamed for the stock market's worst ever start to new year. markets closed down again yesterday. at the rental of the day the dow was down 390 points to close at 15,988. the nasdaq and the s&p 500 were also lower. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandra huff live in the satellite center this morning with more on the slumping markets. good morning, alec. >> good morning. oil prices fell another 6% yesterday down to as low as 2928 a barrel. while may feel good to consumers the stock market has fallen near lock step. as you can imagine energy companies saw the greatest losses as the week closed out many falling at least 10%. not only is that in line with gas but with china. they've been struggling to stabilize their market and thus have impacted confidence back

home on wall street. the hope is always that u.s. customers will then use their money that they've saved on gas elsewhere. it's not clear that that's happening though drivers are appreciative. >> i think they should be low all the time, definitely. i mean just because i'm buying it of course i want it to be l low. >> as far as related to gas, yes, of course. i am always worried about the stock market because like i said before, i would like the goose stay as it is. >> now decent stock market and low gas prices both of those things happening at once, that is the challenge. something that's not unusual but always interesting is that while other commodities fell, gold rose one point 4% yesterday which typically does when investors are fearful. reporting in the sat center this morning alexandria huff, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> alex, thank you. vice-president joe biden's mission to cure cancer begins right here in philadelphia. on friday he toured the university of pennsylvania's abramson cancer center. researchers are working on variety of treatments including

immuno therapy where cancer is killed by the patient's reengineered immune system. the vice-president's mission follows the death of his son beau from brain cancer. >> the goal is whatever break throughs we can make in 10 years my goal is to make sure we can do it in five years. >> um-hmm. >> my goal is that we find absolute cures, but for some cancers we get to the point where we can manage them they become chronic diseases. >> the vice-president says he will use his influence to break down barriers in the medical world. he says the barriers are holding that progress on finding a cure. 12 military personnel are missing after two marine helicopters collided off the oahu coast in hawaii. what was a search for survivors has now turned into a recovery effort. the transport helicopters each carrying six marines including instructor pilots crashed late thursday night during a routine training mission. some on shore heard the impact.

>> around 11:30 i heard a big explosion, boom! then i her another one shortly after, kind of spontaneously, boom, then another boom. >> rescue teams initially found an empty life raft and debris two and a half miles off the north shore. waves up to 40 feet high are complicating their search efforts. flint, michigan water contamination crisis is having deadly effects. michigan's governor is asking for a federal disaster declaration but as adrian in a diaz reports residents have their own demand. >> reporter: flint residents of residents storm state capitol this week calling fort resignation of the governor after learning their drinking water was contaminated with lead. the problems began after the city switch its water supply to the flint river in the spring of 2014. the corrosive water stripped lead from pipes and children in the city were found with high levels of lead in their blood. the city has changed its water

source but environmentalists say the water coming out of faucets is still unsafe. now health officials are investigate a spike in legionnaires' disease. there have been 87 cases of the lou pneumonia like disease sin the water switch, and 10 people have died. including troy kid's mother debbie who died in august. >> so did she die because of somebody didn't want to say, hey, the water might be bad? >> this is what was coming out of their tap. >> dr. mark edwards of virginia tech has been studying flint's water. >> if indeed it is true that this can be linked to the water system and there's aplite tee strong likelihood, yes, unfortunately, people will die from this water. >> adrianna diaz for cbs3 "eyewitness news". meet the millionaires coming up next on "eyewitness news" a tennessee couple claims their share of the powerball jackpot. why they say they don't plan to make major changes to their

snowflakes early this morning. not going to amount to anything. all right. winds they'll kick up later on this morning into the afternoon. as they're switching out of the west to northwest gusting over 20 miles per hour through the afternoon so little bit breezy at times. that wind energy continues across our region tonight. 9:00 o'clock still winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. if you don't like the wind no worries for sunday. those winds really start to relax little bit. but we are talking about some colder air. now the true arctic cold air is not going to come in here until late sunday night into monday when they get this arctic front through here. early neck week look out once again talking about a surge cold temperatures with highs running a good five to even 10 degrees below average. some spots may not make it out of the 20s on monday afternoon. today improving conditions with the clear skies, temperatures upper 40 toes low 50s in some of the warmest spots and then turning colder on sunday. 30s to around 40 degrees much it gets real cold on monday with high of only near 30. so once again below freezing just like early last week and

temperatures may feel like single digits and teens at time. break down your day today. root now still the back of the rain moving through the region by eight, 9:00 o'clock drying out even some clouds breaking up to our south and west. into the afternoon we go. generally partly sunny skies. so overall not bad day with temperatures running above average. tomorrow morning, it's dry, you may see a little bit of sun early but they'll be clouds thickening up a storm to our south. most of that energy stays offshore maybe extreme southern new jersey, southern delaware see a few snow showers from that system. all right. let's talk about the temperatu temperatures. today some lucky spots may get up to around 50 degrees. colder north and west. berks county lehigh valley stuck in the 40s and then tonight, noticeably colder around freezing for the city. 20s in the suburbs. and then the big change in the temperatures on sunday. kind of that transition day. closer to average upper 30 toss near 40 we get ready for that cold arctic blast early next week. so today clearing skies, breezy, 51 for the high temperature for the city. tonight 33, partly cloudy, it's cold and that martin luther king

forecast, look at that. sun and clouds, cold and blustery high of only 29 degrees with gusty winds. tears that extended forecast overall pretty dry. again, high of near 40 on sunday maybe a snow shower across the southern shore points new jersey and delaware. upper 20s on monday. looks like rahel next week just a cold dry week with temperatures holding in the 30s. back over to you. >> justin, so hard to keep up with this weather. thank you. on the health watch new technology developed by google surprisingly low tech. it's a cardboard box that can provide 3d imagery. as health reporter stephanie stahl tells us it was used to save a baby's live. >> reporter: four month old baby is alive in recovering with her parents by her side. thanks to this small cardboard box with two small lenses and a smart phone inside. >> finding out after the fact that this help safe her life, i mean, that's phenomenal. >> reporter: box known as google cardboard was used by a team of pediatric heart surgeons to save the baby's live.

she has a twin sister riley was born with only one lung and half a heart. the first doctors toll the family there was nothing they can do. >> family was given the worst prognosis you can imagine and they were told that she was inoperable that's a word we hate here. >> reporter: miami team was willing to try something new. they took computer scans of her heart and lungs and up loaded the images to a smart phone. they were then able to look at 3d images of her tiny heart and lung using google cardboard a virtual reality vr platform that can provide detailed images. >> the old vr images we used to get were too grainy, not spec enough for the fine detail you need to do a delicate open heart repair on baby. >> reporter: google cardboard virtual reality allowed doctors to visualize the baby's heart in relation to all of her other organs making the operation much simpler. >> being innovative seems to be the goal of this hospital and these doctors, and innovation is

recapture? the mexican government they remember clearly very humiliated by the notion that someone found him before they did. well, nobody found him before they did. we didn't -- we're not smarter than the dea or mexican intelligence. we had a contact upon which we were able to facilitate an invitation. >> reporter: guzman escaped one of mexico's maximum security prisons last july. by crawling through a hole in a shower and a mile long tunnel 30 feet underground. guzman is believed to be responsible for as many as 34,000 deaths. officials say his cartel is the number one supplier of heroin, cocaine and marijuana to the u.s. >> do you believe that the mexican government released this in part because they wanted to see you blamed and to put you at risk? >> yes. they wanted to encourage the cartel to put you in their crosshairs? >> yes.

environment, why not bring it to the beach? cleve bryan coming up how officials in toms river say they'll use christmas trees to fill up the dunes. today is saturday, january 16th. good morning, i'm rahel solomon. meteorologist justin drabick joining us on the "eyewitness weather" center, justin, certainly a wet start to the week but thing are changing. >> right. it got a little bit rough last night. heavy rain rolling through. >> overnight. >> yeah. good news for the weekend people have plans outside looking okay. actually temperatures really not that bad for mid january. >> very mild. >> get up to around 50. don't get used it to. bring that colder air back. you know it will happen once again talking about another shot of arctic air coming in our forecast but today, here's what's happening right now. the last of the rain really rolling through from the city off to the north and east. the heaviest rain up towards the lehigh valley again give it a 15 minutes or half an hour most areas will begin to dry out you may get a stray sprinkle lingering that's about it. so hold off heading outside for another half hour most areas

should be okay. little bit cool this morning. 43 at the airport. we are in the 30s to the far north and west lehigh valley. poconos in the mid 30s this ho hour. suburbs willow grove in at 40 degrees. doylestown you're at 38. visibility fog the only issue is well to the north and west lehigh valley, berks county not actual -- that's actually up proving now and the wind will start to kick up scowering out the fog. this morning the rain comes to an end over the next hour from southwest to northeast. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. this afternoon not too bad. few peeks of sunshine, it's breezy. 40s to around 50 degrees for the high temperature. 51 for the city. today and then tomorrow still some clouds around but it will get noticeably colder with a high of only around 40 degrees. that just sets the stage for that cold arctic air for the holiday on monday. we'll get to that full forecast coming up in a few minutes. rahel, back over to you. >> justin thanks lot members of the union representing physical school district maintenance workers want safety improvements on the job. they're protesting after a boiler explosion at an

elementary school. we get more from "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco. >> reporter: friday the school workers union rallied outside school district headquarters demanding action after a worker is seriously injured. >> what is the district going to do in regard of making these schools safer. >> reporter: chopper three over an explosion inside fs edmunds elementary school that sent a schoolwork kerr to the hospital and evacuated the building with hundreds of children and side. >> the mechanic was trying to get the boiler started back up again. that's what we know. and then the explosion occurred. >> reporter: the 6184 old maintenance worker was rescued from the boiler room and taken to the hospital where he remains in a medica medically induced cb match the mayor now vowing to send inspectors out to all the schools next week. >> tuesday morning, we're going to be out early and everywhere to take look and assess what we need and get the resources we need to fix it. >> we need to fix these schools so our kids aren't in danger. we have one of our member take the hit right now but it could have been many children. >> reporter: the school

district says boilers are repaired every two years and they've spent more than 83 million on boilers in the last 10 years. >> we have a lot of buildings that are quite old. right now we believe there is about $4 billion in need of maintenance for our buildings. >> reporter: the mayor now demanding more money from the state. that worker is in serious but stable condition at einstein medical center. the school has been closed since the incident happened but there are plans to reopen tuesday when work to the boiler is complete. in east mt. airy, i'm diana rocco cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> rowan college at gloucester county is launching two initiatives to make school more affordable. first initiative calls for students who intern with gloucester county government to get free tuition for two years. the second initiative is three plus one program. it allows students to get a bachelor's degree by taking three years at rowan college and one year at rowan university. >> this degree would be

bachelor's degree at approximately $28,000. now students are looking at us that never look at us before. >> keating says quality of an to havable education for students is always on his mine. calls for justice in port richmond from friends and family of ryan kelly. local man who was murdered on thanksgiving day. "eyewitness news" on the 3500 block of gall street for vigil last night. kelly was murdered just two blocks away in the 3600 block of almond street back in november. police found kelly lying in the road suffering from gunshot wounds. he later died at a local hospital. investigators have made no arrests and believe his killers are also responsible for a number of robberies in the area. anyone with information should call philadelphia police. philadelphia police also need your help identifying the man in this composite sketch. the suspect is wanted for robbing and shooting an elderly woman in the face as she walk into the 7100 block of erred trick street in tacony on new year's eve.

police say the suspect was driving this white nissan maxima you just saw there on your screen. it was last seen getting on i-95 heading toward bucks county. $6,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arre arrest. an elderly woman is seriously hurt after her neighbor's car smashes through her wilmington home. chopper three over cold fax court friday morning. the 73-year-old vick testimony was trapped under the car for about half an hour. police say they are neighbor was cited for reckless driving. and penndot is considering an unusual option to ease congestion on the traffic clog schuylkill expressway. officials are studying the idea of opening the shoulder to traffic between route 1 and 202 during peak times. right now it's illegal to drive on the shoulder, you should know, but penndot says the shoulders would need widening and that's a big challenge since much of the road is squeezed between sheets of rock and the river. some drivers we talk to say they think it just might work. >> it's going to be pretty nice

because there's always a lot of traffic and it would clear things up a lot. >> if we can expand that road in any possible way it would be a good thing. >> the penndot study is also considering other improvements such as variable speed limits, new signage and high-tech monitoring of traffic. there's no time frame when all the improvements could be put into place. well have you taken down your christmas tree yet? if you haven't, today is the last day to recycle those trees in philadelphia. all you have to do is drop off your tree at one of six different locations across the city and we listed those on your screen. the recycling centers are open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. today. if you missed any of those locations we'll also put them up on our website at cbsphilly.com. well, christmas may be over, but it is not the end of the road for some christmas trees. in instead of going out to the curb for pick up they're going to the dunes down the shore. dozen christmas trees stack up by the boardwalk in ortley beach. after surviving super storm sandy, anything that fortifies his former home is fine with him. >> well, it destroyed my home. my house wound up on the highw highway. >> reporter: toms river township is asking people who haven't yet diss cared their christmas trees to bring them to the lifeguard station at fourth avenue in ortley beach. the trees will be placed on the beach to help build up the dunes. >> the wind will do it what it's supposed to be and the sand will collect up around it in a couple months you won't see the trees any more. it will be a nice addition to our dune. report roar with so many small barges and lots of little needles, christmas trees are great for grabbing sand. the winter right after sandy island beach state park planted hundreds of trees. this is toms river township's first try. township officials say once they're done collecting all the christmas trees, they'll line them up on the beach between the small front dune that you see behind me and the larger dune back by the boardwalk. it's a win/win for the

a driver's unusually close encounter with a deer left her car severely damaged. the woman was driving just north of hazel town when a deer crash through her windshield and landed in the back seat. first times responders think the deer miff jumped off an embankment. >> seeing the characteristics of how the roof and the windshield looked it was a dead give away this was not going to be normal dear versus car situation. >> they say the driver is lucky to have suffered only minor injuries. the deer however did die on impact. with cameras rolling, firefighters jump into a frozen lake in west milford, new jersey to pull a drowning puppy to safety. scott rappaport of our sister station cbs two in new york spoke with the patient rescuers who say the puppy and the day. >> harrowing scene on lindy's lake in west milford a german

shepherd puppy sick months old falling through a hole in the ice into the frigid waters. rescuers from the volunteer fire department here crawling out on to the lake on their knees to try and safe him. >> let him get him out. get him out. >> west west milford firefighters recording it all. >> the dog was drowning in the ice. >> he went on to the ice a couple times. >> reporter: police say the dog got out of its owner's yard next door and into a world of trouble and danger and saving him will not be easy. deputy chief darrin williams dressed in cold water survival suit goes into the freezing water as the ice blows him cracks while trying to bring the puppy out. the dog is frightened and resists actually biting the rescuers and swimming away. >> he wasn't happy to see us you havely. he was pretty frightened and pretty scared and decided to bite us a lot. >> the challenge not only getting the dog out but getting him out before hypothermia sets in. >> use the sled. put it in front of him.

here's over setup. pretty strong storm system getting its act together but the bulk of the energy is well to the north and east across southern new england. check it out. very heavy rain showing up in the brighter yellows and oranges there across eastern connecticut this hour heading towards cape cod. we're on the back edge of the rain now moving through parts of chester county the city is drying out. leftover steadier rain maybe across normal hampton county in the poconos right now. that should exit within the next half hour. then to our west, we'll start to break up those clouds a little bit and seeing a little bit of sunshine later this morning into the afternoon. some decent rainfall amounts especially south and east of the city. you get towards central delaware kent county sussex county southern new jersey you see a lot of green here showing up indicating around an inch of rain estimate beside rash day around the city about .30 of an inch as the storm system continues to exit the region. temperature wise, with the clouds in place, we're writ much uniform look at the 44s in delaware this hour. 41 up in newark. mid fours millville and atlantic city at the airport. similar conditions around philadelphia.
